My sister loves seahorses

Louise K Tucker
Lately, I’ve really really felt like painting again. I must be honest, I’m not the most patient person when it comes to waiting for the results of my efforts. I always want to see the end result as soon as possible, and of course, painting requires a good deal of patience.

I must be forgiven this time though because I wanted to try different techniques involving salt, toothbrushes and splatters! I also painted in a much looser and more fluid style than I normally use which I think suited the subject matter and the medium down to a tee.

The results were, I feel, effective and I was quite pleased with my version of a long-snouted seahorse in watercolour. I wasn’t the only one who liked it, though! My sister has a passion for seahorses and the colour blue. Once she spotted this little painting she very sweetly asked if it could join her existing collection of seahorse paraphernalia. So, my painting found an instant home and I’m sure my sister will enjoy looking at it!

  • Are you happy with it?

Dear Inner Critic, I was recently reminded of your constant presence by something my husband asked (rather innocently).  He asked me if I was happy with my finished painting.  A rather good question, actually. It’s a bit double-edged though.  I find that I’m never totally happy with the finished product.  There’s always something I could…

  • Flower Girl

It’s Springtime in South Africa and what a gorgeous season it is! We are blessed to have a resident pair of olive thrushes in our garden and they are so cheeky (in the best way!). Every morning the bigger male waits on our stoep (porch) to see what’s for breakfast.  If it’s not to his…

  • Wandering in the Woods

I so enjoyed painting my last collection of woodland creatures, that I thought I’d try my hand at some more. Two of the paintings are of little ground animals, viz. the hedgehog and the mouse. Both of these are placed in their environments with autumn leaves and toadstools as a backdrop.  These shades of oranges,…

  • In a Bunny State of Mind!

I’m blessed to live where it’s part suburb, part country, which means that I get my fix of nature and wildlife on a daily basis. Although not exactly “wild”, there is also a semi-wild black bunny in our area. Let me just say that this little girl is CUTE!! I found out her name is…

  • Bushbaby love

The first thing you usually notice about bushbabies is their enormous eyes.  Makes sense really, as the little guys are nocturnal and rely on their eyes, and their disproportionately large ears to survive and hunt for food. On closer inspection, though, they also have the cutest of noses – just like an upside-down heart. When…
