Beetle rolls a ball in Sesotho

Beetle rolls a ball, the popular graded school reader written by Louise K. Tucker is now available in Sesotho.

The new title: Khola-bolokoe e theta polokoe with ISBN 978-110-8826-112, has recently been published by Cambridge University Press South Africa.

Sesotho, also known as Southern Sotho, is one of South Africa’s 11 official languages. In Lesotho it is a national language (alongside English).

“I’m thrilled that my original story is now available in an indigenous African language,” said Louise. “The value of mother-tongue education should not be underestimated. Studies have determined that children educated in their mother tongue achieve better results in a multitude of areas over children who are not afforded the same opportunity.”

Beetle rolls a ball tells the story of the hard-working dung beetle and its unique role in the environment. (By burying dung, the beetle helps to reduce the number of flies and other pests in the bush.)

The story also highlights that sometimes it’s the “little guys” who can make a big impact.
